It all depends on what the metric for success is. In terms of results, swimming is quite a bit more successful than many VT sports, and has been for nearly a decade now. It is a difficult sport to improve in, and Skinner helped the program improve appropriately through the ACC transition, and get an ACC Title out of it. The ACC has since exploded with talented head coaches, and an ACC title doesn't look very possible in the near future, but ya never know. We may be able to pull some international studs and compete for an occasional top 15/20 NCAA finish. Not sure if that meets most peoples level of success or not.

I would venture to guess, on the other hand, that Swimming and Diving loses more money than any other Olympic Sport at VT, too, which is why I would have concerns for the long-term future, instead of other programs. Additionally, the contract with the Christiansburg pool will run out soon, so that will allow for more unknowns in the future.

I don't think VT is worrying about cutting a sport anytime soon, due to responsible fiscal spending in our history. With that being said, if the cuts eventually start happening at some higher powered P5 schools, I wouldn't be surprised to see VT follow suit.
